John (Andy) Anderson is an academic, mountaineer and endurance athlete. He has a PhD in Management and is a tenured professor at University of Northern Iowa. He has received numerous teaching, research and service awards and recognition’s, including the Meritorious Service award from the University of Northern Iowa Veterans Association for his work with veterans across Iowa.
Andy has a well-developed athletic resume. He was Iowa class 4A state champion in the high jump and then went on to jump competitively at University of Northern Iowa. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree, he rode his bicycle (self-supported) from Dana Point, CA to Wells Beach, ME. He has also cycled from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico. He has raced both mountain and road bikes and has run several marathons and ultra-marathons – including a 100 mile trail ultra-marathon in the mountains of Leadville, Colorado. Andy has also climbed many, many mountains all over the world. He has climbed most of the Colorado 14ers (i.e. mountains 14k feet or higher in elevation), Mount Elbrus (Russia), Matterhorn (Italy/Switzerland), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Grand Teton (Wyoming), Denali (Alaska), Aconcagua (Argentina) and many others.
In 2017, he and his paternal cousin became the first Iowans to reach the summit of Mount Everest from the north (i.e. Tibet, China). Andy grew up in Boone, Iowa and currently lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Parking is available at Jack Trice Stadium in the lots East of Jack Trice (lots S5, S6 & S7). No parking is allowed in parking lot S3 due to the Athlete Jamboree.

Only one representative from teams needs to stop by Sukup.

Proceeds from the Opening Ceremony will benefit Adaptive Sports Iowa. Since being established in 2011, Adaptive Sports Iowa has provided revolutionary sports opportunities for Iowans with physical disabilities. From introducing adaptive sports in the Iowa Games and setting up various sports programs to having a cycling team, ASI hopes to continue to offer Iowans with physical disabilities the chance to showcase their athletic abilities while promoting an atmosphere of fun and community.
Tickets may be purchased online prior to the event. Tickets purchased July 24 or earlier will be mailed to the individual. Tickets purchased online after July 25 will be available for pick inside the Sukup South Endzone from 5:00 – 7:30 pm.
Tickets will also be available on Friday, July 30 inside the Sukup South Endzone from 5:30 – 7:45 p.m. as well as outside the Southeast Gate (Gate 3) at Jack Trice from 6:45 – 7:45 p.m. Method of payment: CASH (preferred method), Check (payable to Iowa Games)
All Iowa Games Athletes & Coaches are encouraged to walk in the Opening Ceremony Parade of Athletes. At 7:45 PM the entertainment and activities will end in Lot S3 but things will just be getting started inside Jack Trice Stadium. Parade of Athletes will line up at Gate 3 on the SE side of Jack Trice, north of Lot S3.
Schedule of Events:
7:15 p.m. – Gates open to Jack Trice Stadium. General Public please use Gate 3 (SE Side) to enter Jack Trice Stadium.
7:45 p.m. – Parade of Athletes Line Up (location to be announced by June 1)
8:00 p.m. – Parade of Athletes Begins.
8:15 p.m. – Opening Ceremony Starts
9:15 p.m. – Fireworks
