In 1987, Iowa became the first state to use the
United States Olympic Committee's flame for a statewide torch run.
That same flame will be carried by runners from all walks of life
for the Summer Iowa Games' annual torch run.
The torch run will depart from Des Moines on Friday, July 18, and
travel north to Ames. The journey will culminate with the lighting
of the Olympic-style cauldron at Jack Trice Stadium during the Opening
Ceremony later that evening.
Torch
carriers will run on hard-surface roads between Des Moines and Ames
on US Highway 69. Applicants will receive details in the mail after returning
their application to the Iowa Games office. All runners will receive
a commemorative t-shirt. Runners under the age of 12 must be accompanied
by an adult.
